What to wear to an Engagement session | New York Engagement Photographer
I love photographing engagement sessions; it’s a fun experience for both my clients and for me. But the question I’m most often asked is what should we wear? So I figured I'd post some tips to find the perfect engagement session outfit. Now I must preface this and say that I tend to be the type of person who likes to overdress. Most of my closet consists of dresses, skirts, blouses, etc. If I could wear a dress all year round I would. But unfortunately I live in New York and that’s not possible. It’s really cold here and as much as I am dying to wear a dress, I’d rather not die of hypothermia. In preparation for the session I send my clients an email with outfit suggestions. I suggest having at least 2 outfits; one dressy and the other casual just to give them some variety. And because I’m a part of #teamoverdressed of course I’m partial to having a dressy option. So I love suggesting skirts, dresses, or nice dress pants and a blouse for the ladies, and slacks, a nice shirt and shoes for the guys.
But when it comes to suggestions for the casual outfit, I’m at a loss. For instance, most of the time when my husband and I go on a date night it’s like we’re dressing for two different scenarios. I’m most likely wearing some form of a skirt or dress in the warmer months and dress pants in the cooler months. He tends to dress more appropriately for the occasion depending on where we’re going. He has great style, both dressy and casual, so he has more variety to work with. Me on the other hand, I have no variety. When I shopping, I gravitate towards the less practical gowns, and dresses. I’m at a loss for causal clothing.
So when I was thinking of writing this blog post, I was thinking how on earth am I going to give anyone tips on how to dress casually for their engagement session? Behold, that is why God gave us Pinterest! I’ve created a pinterest board of both dressy and casual outfit ideas for your engagement session. One for the ladies and one for the guys! I’m not saying that you have to go out and buy these clothes but it’s just an idea of the type of clothes that look photographically flattering. (Wow what a tongue twister) I must also say that it’s important to stay true to your style. If you’re not a dressy person and you love to keep it casual, then by all means dress in whatever makes you feel your best. One suggestion is to dress as if it was your first date and you’re trying to make a good first impression on your fiancé. What would you wear that would make him/her think “Wow he/she looks so good!”
Lastly, four important things to keep in mind when planning your outfits:
- Wear complimentary colors. Neutral tones without busy patterns are best. The camera loves them and will love you in it.
- Your outfits should compliment each other. You don’t have to wear the same exact colors. Just make sure your outfits compliment each other. See #1.
- Stay true to your style. I don’t want you to look back on your photos and think, “Why on earth did I wear that?” If it’s not a style you would usually wear, don’t wear it. Wear what you feel the most confident in.
- Dress for the season. If it’s cold, wear something warm. Don’t wear a strapless dress in the wintertime or a shirt with no coat if it’s cold. Accessories like scarves and coats can really make an outfit stand out.
